This makes me appreciate being able to vote locally.
California lets you fax them, so we did, but the processing time is much slower once the ballot is received. Next election, we’re going to mail ours or utilize the diplomatic pouch method so at least we can see the processing updates sooner.
Surely the $50 is worth it?
Yes, I would pay it if it was the only way to vote. Fortunately, there's enough time I can use the postal service and pay about $3 for each ballot.
Could it be any easier, cost effective, or expedient to take the completed ballots to the American embassy somehow?
Cheaper -- you can use the US postage equivalent and they will deliver it in a diplomatic pouch. But they say it takes 3 weeks on average.
